Riviera Maya is the area south of Cancun situated on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The Hard Rock Hotel is located on the north end of Puerto Aventuras- 55 minutes south of Cancun International Airport, 40 minutes north of Tulum, and 25 minutes south of Playa del Carmen.
Don't forget to bring some Mexican Pesos with you. Check the current exchange rate before you arrive and come prepared! Many local shops and restaurants in the area will take US Dollars but you may end up paying a bit more, so check the exchange rate with them before you buy. When using US Dollars, expect your change to be returned in Pesos. You can exchange Dollars to Pesos at the front desk at Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya, just make sure you have your passport with you. There is also an ATM that dispenses Pesos in the each lobby.
Taxis are readily available at Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya by letting the bellman know where you wish to go. There are signs posted with fixed rates to go into local towns, or you can negotiate a rate to go almost anywhere else. If you prefer to explore on your own, you can also rent a car by speaking to the bellman in either lobby. Parking is free for hotel guests to park on resort property.
Check Out The Area
If you want to extend your vacation and stay in authentic Mexican town, this is your spot. This area has many restaurants in the beach zone and downtown if you are craving fresh ceviche, fish, or some of the Best. Tacos. Ever. The world renowned beaches of Tulum offer activities such as beachside yoga, kite-surfing and snorkeling. In addition to all of this you can also check out the Tulum ruins and get a feel for the unique history of the area.
Head 20 minutes south to Akumal Beach and spend the day with the sand between your toes. There's plenty of swimming and diving in the clear waters of Akumal Bay with great visibility and world famous turtle snorkeling. Plus, white sandy beaches to spend the day relaxing. The great thing about the beach in Akumal is the ability to spread out and have a quiet beach day. If you want to meet some cool people, there are many places to visit along the beach with local dive bars and restaurants.
Playa del Carmen
Jump in a taxi and take a quick ride to Playa del Carmen. This city on the coast was originally a small fishing town that has recently seen rapid growth. Live like a local and grab some tacos from the easily walkable downtown area. Along 5th Avenue, there are many restaurants and great shopping to bring back some souvenirs for your family.
Turn your trip into a long vacation with a visit to Cozumel. Get yourself to Playa del Carmen and take a local ferry to the island. After a 40 min ferry ride, you'll end up in downtown Cozumel. Stay downtown or head to the laid-back beaches like Playa Palancar - a free beach where you can spend the day relaxing.
